What is a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies come in many forms, the most common is a tooth ache, swelling, or trauma to a tooth. A delay in seeking emergency care can result in increased pain or infection and more expensive dental treatment.

What are the benefits of Emergency Dental care?

Emergency dental care can help you find immediate relief from tooth pain, prevent existing symptoms from worsening, and prevent additional damage to your teeth. Though some patients may try to wait it out, leaving urgent problems untreated often leads to more pain, increased infection, and possible tooth loss, ultimately leading to more extensive treatment.

Dental Emergencies & Trauma Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my tooth has been knocked out?

If your tooth has been knocked out, you can still save it with the proper measures. Below are step by step measures to follow. Trauma that results in the displacement of a tooth requires immediate treatment — ideally within 30 minutes. Follow the steps below to optimize your chances of retaining your tooth:

Additional Reading

  1. Pick up your tooth by the crown (chewing surface) and not the root. Touching the root of your tooth can cause permanent damage. As soon as you locate your lost tooth, pick it up by its crown, and be careful of the root as you follow the subsequent instructions.
  2. Gently clean your tooth. If the tooth is dirty, carefully rinse it using water only—do not use soap or chemicals. It is also important that you avoid scrubbing the tooth or wrapping it in a tissue or cloth.
  3. Place the tooth back in its socket, if possible. Once your tooth is clean, try to reposition it into its socket. Still holding it by the crown, press down gently with your fingers or close your mouth slowly to secure the tooth. Once it is back in its socket, you can hold it in place by gently biting down or holding it in place with your fingers.
  4. Keep your tooth moist. If you are unable to place your tooth back into its socket, you can place it in milk or use an emergency tooth preservation kit (like Save-a-Tooth®). Do not soak your tooth in regular tap water, as it can damage root surface cells over an extended period of time.
  5. Visit your dentist or endodontist within 30 minutes of the injury. Bring your tooth with you, and arrive for your emergency dental appointment as quickly as possible. While it is best to receive treatment within 30 minutes, you may be able to save your tooth even if it has been unattached for an hour or longer.

Can the ER help with a dental emergency?

While a visit to the emergency room may be able to help you manage symptoms, they are unlikely to be able to fully treat your dental emergency. The best course of action in the case of a dental emergency is to schedule a visit with a specialist immediately.
